![]() Wrinkles
As skin ages, collagen and elastin, fibers that keep the skin firm, weaken. The skin looks loose and lax, becomes thinner and loses fat so that it looks less plump and smooth. The loss of underlying fat and bone causes the skin to fold and wrinkle. Can Wrinkles Be Avoided? The sun is the major cause of unwanted changes in the skin with aging. How wrinkled your skin becomes depends largely on how much sun you have been exposed to in your lifetime, and your genetic background. Cigarette smoking can also contributeto wrinkles, whether you are smoking or someone around you is smoking. The good news is that many wrinkles can be prevented. Remember that sun exposure as a child or teenager can make a big difference to the appearance of the skin at the age of 30, 40 or 50. So, begin to use sunscreen as a child to avoid wrinkles caused by the sun. Always wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and reapply every 1.5 hours, wear a hat with a brim and other protective clothing when in the sun, do not deliberately sunbathe, and try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you have already sun-damaged your skin, you will still benefit from beginning sun protection as an adult. It is never too late. The skin has a remarkable ability to heal itself once protected. “Broken Capillaries” or Telangiectasias
These dilated facial blood vessels may be related to sun damage. They respond to treatment with electrosurgery or laser surgery. Treatments for Mature Skin
There are some promising treatments for mature skin. Retinoic acid, originally formulated as a cream for treating acne, improves the skin surface texture, reduces irregular pigmentation and increases dermal collagen if applied daily for six months or longer. It is currently the only medication approved by the FDA as safe and effective for reversing some of the effects of sun damage. Hydroxy acids can also help reverse some of the effects of the sun by exfoliating or peeling away dead, damaged skin cells. Creases caused by facial expressions such as squinting, frowning or smiling can be treated by a dermatologist with injectable soft tissue “dermal fillers” such as collagen, hyaluronic acid or fat. These fillers are injected into or under the skin of the wrinkles and scars to puff the crease or the scar. A naturally produced toxin, botulinum toxin, can also be injected to “relax” the small muscles and thus minimize expression lines such as frown lines. None of these remedies can guarantee the appearance of youthful skin, but they can improve the overall appearance of your skin. Wrinkled skin may be improved by resurfacing with surgery, lasers, dermabrasion or chemical peels. Before you undertake any home treatment or surgery, discuss your options with your dermatologist. |
